Negli anni Ottanta andavano di moda le sale giochi, popolate da una folta schiera di persone, le quali ci andavano per passare qualche ora in spensieratezza e probabilmente non avevano le risorse o la passione minime per possedere una console per videogiochi domestica. E’ proprio in quegli anni che tanti grandi brand videoludici hanno fatto il loro ingresso nella cultura di massa, chi per la sua qualità, chi per la sua difficoltà e chi per la sua unicità, come il caso del primo Darius, sparatutto a scorrimento orizzontale affrontabile a uno o due giocatori che si caratterizzava per avere ben tre schermi CRT affiancati nel cabinato di gioco, rendendo il rapporto larghezza/altezza dell’area di gioco esasperato e aggiungendo all’elemento meraviglia un fattore di notevole difficoltà, avendo molti più nemici a schermo di quanti se ne potessero trovare nei suoi concorrenti a singola videata.
