Odino non era solo il Padre degli déi e il Saggio Viandante, quando con il suo destriero a otto zampe Sleipnir, scendeva nei campi di battaglia degli uomini, diventava il dio della tempesta e della guerra; al suo seguito vi erano un gruppo di fanciulle guerriere che indossavano luminose armature ed elmi alati, le loro spade scintillavano come lampi, mentre avanzavano tra le nuvole e la schiuma dei loro destrieri cadeva come grandine sulla terra. Erano le Valchirie. Proprio le Valchirie decidevano chi, fra i morti in battaglia avrebbe raggiunto Asgard, luogo di eroi destinati ad una vita gloriosa nella dimora degli ospiti di Odino: il Valhalla.
