Con Mary Skelter: Nightmares e il più recente Death end re;Quest, i ragazzi di Compile Heart hanno ufficialmente dato il via al loro processo di rinnovamento. Per fare ciò, la software house nipponica ha deciso di abbandonare le tematiche infantili e stereotipate dei loro vecchi progetti al fine di abbracciare storie più mature e cupe. Se con Death end re;Quest questo processo era riuscito a dare i primi riscontri positivi, Dragon Star Varnir doveva consolidare tutte le ottime idee che l’accoppiata formata da Compile Heart e Idea Factory avevano messo insieme per il vecchio progetto.
